In a discussion with H. E. Pádraig Francis, the Ambassador of Ireland to Indonesia, key topics surrounding Ireland’s role in the European Union (EU) and global politics were explored. Ambassador Francis emphasized the importance of Ireland’s membership in the EU, particularly in the post-Brexit era. He noted that while Ireland is a small nation, its influence in world affairs is amplified through cooperation with EU partners. The Ambassador addressed the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe, particularly Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and highlighted the significant impact on global stability, including economic disruptions felt even as far as Indonesia. He stressed that Ireland, through its collaboration within the EU, is committed to playing a vital role in addressing these challenges and promoting peace and security.
Ambassador Francis also reflected on the lessons learned from Ireland’s recent tenure on the UN Security Council, underlining the increased value of multilateral cooperation in tackling global issues such as climate change, humanitarian crises, and conflict. On the topic of Brexit, he acknowledged the difficulties it brought to Ireland, particularly in terms of trade and the complex situation regarding Northern Ireland. However, he expressed optimism about the current state of relations between Ireland and the United Kingdom, which have improved after intensive negotiations. Regarding the possibility of a referendum on the unification of Ireland and Northern Ireland, Ambassador Francis acknowledged its potential but emphasized that it is unlikely in the near future, stressing that any change must be supported by the people of Northern Ireland.
The Irish language (Irish Gaelic) is a vital part of Ireland’s cultural heritage, despite its decline in use over the past few centuries. Recently, there has been a revival in the use of the Irish language, with it being taught in all primary and secondary schools and an increasing number of schools offering full education in Irish. The state also supports Irish-language media, including radio and television, and the language is gaining more presence on social media. While state support is crucial, the commitment of the Irish people is ultimately what sustains the language.
In terms of tourism, Ireland offers a wide range of unique experiences, from dramatic natural landscapes like the Cliffs of Moher to ancient monuments such as Newgrange, as well as vibrant nightlife in its cities. Although awareness of Ireland in Indonesia may not be as high as desired, free visas for Indonesian tourists and easy access from other European destinations make it an attractive option. The Irish Ambassador to Indonesia highlighted the importance of food as a cultural exploration during his tenure, noting that traditional Irish and Indonesian dishes have become a significant part of his cultural experience.
