(Business Lounge – Travel) Some towns reveal themselves slowly, and others greet you the moment you arrive. Riva del Garda belongs to the second kind. Sitting at the northern tip of Lake Garda in Trentino, it places a cluster of pastel buildings, a medieval tower and a quiet harbour directly in front of a wall of pale limestone peaks. These cliffs belong to the mountain ranges at the southern edge of the Dolomite country, and they follow you through every street of the old town.<\/p>\n

The square at the heart of town<\/h4>\n

The best place to begin is Piazza III Novembre, because every path in the old town seems to lead back to it. Terracotta, ochre, peach and brick-red fa\u00e7ades surround a floor of pale pebbles, their green shutters and wrought-iron balconies catching the evening light. Under the arcades, pizzerias, birrerie and caf\u00e9s have set out white umbrellas, and cyclists, dog walkers and families cross the open space without hurry.Look up beyond the rooftops and you understand why the town feels so dramatic. The mountain does not recede into the distance here; it stands right behind the buildings.<\/p>\n

The Torre Apponale and the waterfront<\/h4>\n

Rising above the square is the Torre Apponale, the town\u2019s best-known landmark. This stone clock tower dates from the Middle Ages and was built beside the water to guard the port. Its balustraded top and twin clock faces now serve as a compass for visitors, since from almost anywhere in the old town you can look up and see where you are. From the foot of the tower, a few steps carry you to the shore. Bar Hotel Sole stands in warm yellow beside the quay, a bronze ring sculpture marks the water\u2019s edge, and the lake opens out beyond it.<\/p>\n

Just inland, the yellow Grand Hotel Riva faces the square with its balconied entrance and rooftop terrace. It reminds you that this has been a place for travellers for a very long time.<\/p>\n

Down to the harbour<\/h4>\n

Walk through the arcades to the water and the mood softens. Wooden mooring posts stand in calm, dark water, ducks drift between them, and a vintage passenger boat waits at its berth. Ferries link Riva with villages along the lake, and on a clear evening a blue haze settles between the ridges so that the mountains seem to fold into one another.<\/p>\n

Along the promenade<\/h4>\n

From the harbour, a cobbled promenade follows the shore, lined with palms and old iron street lamps. Restaurant tables are already laid in white linen as the afternoon fades, and residents stroll past with the unhurried pace of people who know the view will still be there tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Beyond the last restaurant the path reaches a few large rocks at the water\u2019s edge. A stone bench makes a natural place to sit, and the whole length of the lake is laid out in front of you, with mountains on both sides narrowing toward the horizon.<\/p>\n

Fortress, canal and church<\/h4>\n

Turning back toward town, you find the Rocca di Riva, a moated medieval fortress that now houses the Museo Alto Garda. Small wooden boats are moored in the canal beside it, and in the evening local residents gather on the stone bollards to talk, which gives this corner a lived-in feel that many tourist spots lack.<\/p>\n

A short walk inland, the scene changes again. Lawns, cedars and clipped hedges lead to the octagonal Chiesa dell\u2019Inviolata, a Baroque church with a slender bell tower. Behind it the mountains return, as they always do in Riva, to remind you where you are.<\/p>\n

Riva del Garda is pleasant all year, but late spring and autumn bring mild weather, softer light and thinner crowds. The old town is compact, so a half day is enough to see the main sights, though you will want more time for a boat trip, a lakeside walk and a long dinner by the water. If you can, arrive about an hour before sunset. The square glows, the mountains turn blue and gold, and the promenade is at its best.<\/p>\n
