In 1345, the celebrated Moroccan traveler Ibn Battuta journeyed to Samudera Pasai in Sumatra, recording his encounters with the people of the archipelago. His writings marked the first historic handshake between Morocco and Indonesia, a cultural and intellectual bridge that continues to inspire both nations.

This bond was reaffirmed in the 20th century, when Morocco and Indonesia stood together at the Asia–Africa Conference in Bandung in 1955, united in their struggle against colonialism and their defense of independence. President Soekarno’s state visit to Morocco in 1960, warmly welcomed by King Mohammed V, further cemented this friendship. Today, Rabat honors this legacy with an avenue named after President Soekarno, a living symbol of respect and remembrance.

Shared Values, Shared Vision
In a world increasingly marked by fragmentation, Morocco and Indonesia have emerged as influential voices in their regions. Guided by His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision of openness and partnership, Morocco has embraced collaboration across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Indonesia, with its dynamic economy and strategic position in Southeast Asia, is recognized as a natural partner in this endeavor.

As Ambassador Houssaini emphasized, the two economies are complementary, not competitive. Morocco’s industrial strength—Africa’s leading automotive producer, a hub for aerospace components, and home to Tangier Med, the Mediterranean’s largest container port—offers Indonesia a platform to expand its reach. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s vast consumer base and growing expertise in agribusiness create fertile ground for joint ventures that can serve both domestic and international markets.

Morocco: Indonesia’s Golden Gateway
For Indonesia, Morocco is more than a partner—it is a gateway. Positioned at the crossroads of Europe, Africa, and the Arab world, Morocco provides access to a market of 2.5 billion consumers. Its preferential trade agreements with Europe and the United States, coupled with deep integration into African economies, make it an ideal launchpad for Indonesian businesses seeking global expansion.

Agriculture and renewable energy stand out as promising sectors for cooperation. Morocco’s expertise in agribusiness and green energy, combined with Indonesia’s production capacity and demand, can create sustainable supply chains that benefit both nations. By leveraging Morocco’s logistical advantages and Indonesia’s economic dynamism, the partnership can evolve into a modern engine of growth and prosperity.

<iframe title="Morocco: Indonesia’s Gateway to 2.5 Billion Consumers - Interview with H.E.
